Even though the qualifications list is small and on the light side, I expect they will ask much more difficult questions about your background in an interview and even may grade your resume harder than the job posting suggests. This is a meteorology trading role so you get a bonus, which is one of the biggest ways energy meteorology is different from other fields, you get paid for being accurate.

About the Company As someone with some wildfire knowledge I have interviewed with at least 7 electric utilities over the last two years and while there were many common themes, the one name that came up repeatedly was Technosylva and have you used their software. I believe there is a strong chance they have a big edge in the wildfire AI software space. These utilities are using any and all tech they have because the cost of a wildfire goes far beyond just the Billion dollar price tag. Who Should Apply? As a baseline you should have a background in wildfire meteorology, even if you were never in charge and just made forecasts without talking to anyone. The dynamics of a wildfire should already be built-in to your knowledge bank and all you would need is a quick refresh. That may get you in the door, but it would be super helpful if you both know what SaaS is and have work in a management or customer-facing role, even if the customer was essentially your coworkers on a day-to-day basis. To really excel, you should have experience that can be use to connect your background to the job qualifications and this is something you can convey in an interview. This job is about communicating fire weather information to customers and in the interview this should come across very strongly that you know what you are talking about. If you are interested in wildfire meteorology, but don't have any experience, you probably are not going to be selected About the Location The job says remote, but it says remote Denver, Colorado. This could be to work with one of their customers, Xcel Energy, which is based in Denver or it could be that they have an office, but you can still work remote. There is a possibility you need to live in Colorado, but would never really need to go into the office. I listed this a remote, but it is always worth contacting the company directly to find out.

BVS, the software you would work on is a marine weather software. The role is to work with customers and likely help use and navigate around any issues. You could do this role, and then potentially advance into another role in meteorology. I would only suggest this role for people in the Baltic region of the EU, but anyone can apply.

Aviation requires a knowledge of surface wind systems also important for road forecasting, energy forecasting, or marine forecasting, and severe weather forecasting. You also need to understand temperature microclimates and land/sea interactions. Other than wind, the second most important requirement is the ability to forecast low clouds and cloud ceilings and coverage.

However, a core part of this position is understanding data analytical programming skills using Python or R and then using these tools to build models of how the weather influences power flows across Europe. There is heavy emphasis in this location on hydro power which involves an understanding of snowpack forecasting in the mountains of Norway, snowmelt and based on sea surface temperature, weather teleconnections like the NAO, and how ENSO may influence the temperature structure across this region. This job is sort of regulatory in that you are visiting construction projects for large residential, renewable energy, and data centers to determine if air quality around the project is below the required thresholds. My first job out of university was doing something like this, but I was onsite at chemical facilities. The work likely involves using various types of measurement devices, that you should know how to do and then taking your measurements and observations back into a lab to develop reports on the levels of certain pollutants. If you are interested in air quality this would be a good opportunity if you are located in the UK or Ireland.

I know of at least one university, Millersville, in the US has a track for emergency management. I am sure there are others. In the US, you would need to understand a lot of protocol, FEMA, other government programs and rules. You definitely need some sort of background in emergency management or if you do have some background in wildfires, or maybe NOAA, you could translate that into this role.

Weather news is all about sensationalism and trying to hook viewers to follow a story and to gain an audience. I'm not saying TV mets do not offer a valuable source for weather information. The incoming El Niño is a good example of something that is interesting to write about, show colorful graphics and images and try to help often an audience of the general public learn something new. You get to teach people what you know about the El Niño. The difference is that you have to change gears to share how the El Niño will impact the client's operations. Working in agriculture commodities I talk about the El Niño's impact on long range patterns, seemingly all day everyday. The trick for me is to communicate the risks of El Niño without using heavy jargon so I don't cause the customer to lose focus and miss the important information I need to tell them. What I can't do is get so wrapped up in the meteorology and miss conveying the insight they need to make a decision or take action. It can be harder to do this then you think as customers often want to tell you how much they know about the weather. This may give you a false sense of safety in explaining something much more complex than everyday weather. It's ok to have friendly banter at the start of the conversation, but then you need to transition into the actionable insight you will offer to them. Good luck on the job search! |
