Title: Crisis Management Meteorology Intern

Key Skills or Knowledge You Will Learn

  • Monitoring daily weather forecasts, watches, warnings, advisories, and other weather products that may impact utility operations. - Primary part of most meteorology jobs, especially in utilities. Use this knowledge to get future roles.
  • Assisting with the preparation of daily weather briefings, storm outlooks, and situational awareness reports. - This is also very translatable to other utilities, other weather jobs, and NOAA.
  • Learning to analyze forecast models, radar imagery, and meteorological data to identify potential operational impacts. - Part of every meteorologists job.
  • Supporting weather monitoring activities during severe weather and emergency events. - This will help you understand what is severe, even non-warned events, and how to communicate the risk and impacts to other people.

  • Supporting efforts to correlate weather information with operational and outage data. - Again proving where the weather impacted the system which will help be more in tuned with utility operations.
  • Assisting with the enhancement of weather intelligence capabilities within the Ameren Illinois Crisis Management Dashboard and Athena AI platform. - This is where you can use data analysis and programming skills.
  • Researching emerging weather technologies, forecasting tools, and decision-support resources used within the utility industry.
  • Collaborating with team members across crisis management, emergency preparedness, operations, and business continuity functions.
  • Participating in training, exercises, after-action reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Who Should Apply?

The reason I put this in energy is because the company is a utility. However, the title of the position is more emergency management type of work. However, anytime you intern or work for a company there is a chance you will advance to another position and this could be viewed as a utility job, not just emergency management.

Even though I lived in Chicago and travel there frequently I have never heard of Ameren and the reason most likely is that they cover everything south of Chicago in more rural or smaller areas. Their biggest city is St. Louis, Missouri. The thing about Ameren's coverage area is that they get a lot of severe thunderstorms including straight line winds and tornadoes, heavy flooding rains, snow and ice storms in the winter and intense heat in the summer. A little of everything.

You should apply more likely if you are attending university nearby at Northern Illinois, Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, or another school that has a meteorology program that I didn't list. Or if you are from Chicago and have family nearby. Peoria is a small town surrounded by farms. If you had a strong interest in corn or soybean, living in Peoria would be educational as well.

That being said, this sounds like a good internship to get experience with a utility that even if it wasn't Ameren you could land a full-time role with another utility. Once you understand how one utility functions you can often translate this to another utility.


Title: Meteorology Operations Lead

Key Skills:

  • Knowledge of meteorological processes, climatology, forecasting techniques, and weather modal analysis. - This broad brushes the knowledge you should have, which should be heavy on mountain meteorology, coastal processes, and micro climates specific to the Pacific Northwest of the US. This includes wildfires, but also anomalous temperatures, severe wind and rain events, coastal flooding, and then frozen precipitation, which when it occurs can be pretty bad for power lines.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, perform under pressure, and meet deadlines in a fairly fast paced environment. - People need answers, often at times that don't work with your schedule. You may have to prioritize where you focus your attention.
  • Management skills including the ability to establish objectives, execute policy, and lead the development or implementation of a system, program, or process.
  • High degree of independent initiative, discretion and sound judgment as well as the ability to integrate company priorities in emergency situations. - Connecting the dots, even when you've not been told how they connect.

About the Company

The company is 3 parts with PacifiCorp at the top and then Pacific Power and Rocky Mountain Power below. This role is with Pacific Power.

Who Should Apply

If you have worked for a utility or within energy trading, you are likely the top candidate. However, if there is no candidates with that background, if you have experience in fire weather, NOAA, or any location where you've had to work across multiple departments, make decisions, and act at times as the subject matter expert, then you might also be able to get into an interview.

You should apply because you want to work in a position where you are the go to person for information about specific weather information or impacts. You can, with confidence, convey the impact of El Nino on the Pac Northwest and how when you break this down, will affect utility operations and how this will translate to 2027. Based on the expected weather pattern, you can, with confidence, go against the models when needed to provide the actual most likely outcome. You understand the intricacies of the mountain/valley system, how the coastal mountains interact with the Cascades, with the much higher volcanic summits, how cold air from the interior can in some patterns surge west through the Columbia Gorge and flood the Willamette Valley with sub-freezing temperatures.

You definitely understand that a cold front in Yakima is not cold!

About the Location

If you've read any of the previous reports you know that Oregon and Portland is one of my favorite locations in the US. I could go rock climbing at Smith Rock in the morning near Bend, then snow ski at Mount Bachelor, then enter what feels like a scene from The Goonies in Cannon Beach where I could hike to a view of the Tillamook Lighthouse. In addition to the outdoors activities, Portland is generally a great city to explore. Seattle is about a 3-4 hour trip to the North.

About the Company

As someone with some wildfire knowledge I have interviewed with at least 7 electric utilities over the last two years and while there were many common themes, the one name that came up repeatedly was Technosylva and have you used their software. I believe there is a strong chance they have a big edge in the wildfire AI software space. These utilities are using any and all tech they have because the cost of a wildfire goes far beyond just the Billion dollar price tag.

Who Should Apply?

As a baseline you should have a background in wildfire meteorology, even if you were never in charge and just made forecasts without talking to anyone. The dynamics of a wildfire should already be built-in to your knowledge bank and all you would need is a quick refresh. That may get you in the door, but it would be super helpful if you both know what SaaS is and have work in a management or customer-facing role, even if the customer was essentially your coworkers on a day-to-day basis. To really excel, you should have experience that can be use to connect your background to the job qualifications and this is something you can convey in an interview. This job is about communicating fire weather information to customers and in the interview this should come across very strongly that you know what you are talking about.

About the Location

The job says remote, but it says remote Denver, Colorado. This could be to work with one of their customers, Xcel Energy, which is based in Denver or it could be that they have an office, but you can still work remote. There is a possibility you need to live in Colorado, but would never really need to go into the office. I listed this a remote, but it is always worth contacting the company directly to find out.

This is a startup that is trying to flip the current reinsurance industry on its head and developing risk models using a different approach. Who Should Apply?

You have been on a large ship and enjoy the idea of being in the open ocean. While this role is land-based, the job requirements ask that you have been on the ocean and understand what large swells feel like. Large 25-30 meter swells are not something most people enjoy the idea of riding over on a ship and so this job is about routing ships around significant swells, which also slow down the ship and make the route less than efficient. Everything in routing ships is about safety and designing fuel-efficient routes. Ships sailing from India to other locations in other oceans will involve traversing through known pirate zones and you may have to arrange private contractors for security, aka guys with guns. In addition, winds, tropical systems, and ice can create situations that are not efficient or safe. In this role you will learn a lot about exports/imports for worldwide ports and learn what types of cargo are less safe for transport. I've worked as a route analyst for a brief time in my career.

Aviation requires a knowledge of surface wind systems also important for road forecasting, energy forecasting, or marine forecasting, and severe weather forecasting. You also need to understand temperature microclimates and land/sea interactions. Other than wind, the second most important requirement is the ability to forecast low clouds and cloud ceilings and coverage.

This is an interesting internship because you will get to work on a tool and applications that may be used by The Weather Company in services they provide to customers. Now you can look at this role in two ways. You can take a negative approach and question why they are hiring someone very cheaply to work on new tools. It's a valid thought. Or, if you are looking for a job at this point, you can see it as an opportunity to work at The Weather Company, a company with many meteorology positions, and maybe you can turn this into a full-time gig. At a minimum, I would look at this as they are going to pay you to learn how to use all the tools they list in the Bonus section and the AI.

Who Should Apply?

You don't want to forecast, but you want to work for a well known name in innovative weather technology and you want to work in machine learning and AI. If you've used weather AI models you know they have some positives and a lot of negatives and so you want to work with a company that has the tech, the investment, and the right people to make headway in developing ML/AI weather prediction models.

Location

Golden is basically West Denver and is also the location of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The city sits in sort of a valley between some bluffs to the East and the foothills to the West leading up to the Rocky Mountains. If you like the outdoors, this puts you right there. If you don't like the outdoors, Denver is right on the other side of the bluffs and you could stay in the urban setting and never step foot in the mountains.

Who Should Apply?

Not a forecasting role at all. They don't even list meteorology, but that doesn't matter, if you have a PhD or Master's degree in atmospheric science and have any sustainability background working with GHG accounting and can at least understand what Python is doing, then apply. This is way out on the edge of being connected to meteorology, but it is climate-related and if you have a climate background, even in meteorology there is always a chance.
