Who Should Apply? This is a great job for senior-level meteorologists who have been around the block and have made the hard calls on a global scale, often in stressful situations. If you've been in this position, then you know that several things can go wrong with a forecast, and when we are talking about dozens of ships all over the world, there is a good chance for a forecast to miss. You have to be flexible and humble and willing to be wrong, learn, and move on. About the Location Miami is a great location if you enjoy the beach, like all the time. While there is a whole city, a big part of it is either on the water or on the beach. That being said, much like the airlines, a big perk of this job is the free cruises on their brands, which, of course, are in tropical locations, but also sail worldwide. Imagine never seeing snow again if you didn't want to. Who Should Apply? San Antonio is known for its River Walk, but that is just one well-managed river. There are many rivers, both spring-fed and not, that move through the area along their way to the Gulf of Mexico. Some of these rivers are fed by lakes and dams upstream. The landscape around San Antonio is quite arid and full of hills and ravines, and when it rains, the runoff quickly empties into the rivers and can lead to major flooding. The case last year west of San Antonio with the Guadalupe River is a great example of severe river flooding. While short, the river can rise to significant heights when the river channel is very narrow. The job, based on the qualifications, seems to be advertising to the NOAA employees, as they are expecting you to have used AWIPS. Now, I've used AWIPS for many years and never worked for NOAA, so it is possible, but most people are not going to have that experience. I think anyone could learn that software, but I'm also not aware of any similar software available to the public that would give you the experience they are looking for. However, if you are already in Texas or want to be and have experience around hydrology or for NOAA, then you should apply. About the Location San Antonio, home of the Alamo, the River Walk, the Spurs, SeaWorld, and more. Then outside the city, there are caverns like Natural Bridge, spring-fed rivers which are well known for tubing or rafting down in the blazing hot summers, and you could visit the best water park in the world, Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. There is a lot to do around San Antonio. April through September is really hot, but not as humid as Houston. Who Should Apply? If you live in the European Union or have the right to work there and want to work in energy meteorology, this is for you. While you may think a lot about windmills and solar facilities when you think of energy, on the renewable side, there is battery storage that is growing, and where many companies are focused, there is natural gas, and then there are the actual temperatures in specific regions, which you must be able to forecast. While this job is in Poland, the company could be trading anywhere in the world. Who Should Apply? Brazilian citizens or residents of the country who can get the CREA registration. While StormGeo (based in Norway) is the parent company, many companies with offices in other countries require you to have the right to work before starting. So while this does eliminate many possible applicants, Brazil is a huge country, and some likely many people could likely take this job as well. If you are early in your career and want a chance to not just grow with Climatempo but be on the radar of a much larger global company, this is a good role. Final Thoughts I decided to change the format up a bit and put the jobs first and the commentary second so that I can add additional stories in the future. There are many jobs out there right now, many besides the ones I listed, including more openings in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the US. And as I said above, if you want to learn about energy, including trading, but also wildfire meteorology, mountain meteorology, and many of the components that go into aviation, road, and marine weather, I am teaching a course in the Fall of 2026 about becoming an energy meteorologist. There will be a shorter, asynchronous course and a longer, instructor led with guest appearances. Currently (Thursday, the 2nd of July) in the New York City area, it is anywhere from 98 to 105 F / 37 to 41 C. 20 million people live in this region, plus all the office buildings and industrial companies, and the demand on the power grid is significant. When you add in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C and all the smaller towns and cities, you get a huge demand on the electricity grid. This demand is met with power generated by power plants all across the region, which is put onto high-voltage transmission lines and sent to the customers. In addition to fossil-fuel-powered generation, renewables in the US provide support through wind, solar, hydro, and battery storage. Also, there are the data centers to deal with. This is just for PJM, which is the group that makes sure there is enough power for all the people who need power. If you are a meteorologist in the US and working for an energy trading firm, your job is to predict this demand in the months, weeks, days, and hours before the power is needed. If you can provide the traders with knowledge of a potential extreme or anomalous weather event, well before it happens, the traders can buy low and sell high and make millions of dollars. Even better, if PJM finds out there is not enough power to meet the demands of all the customers and they have to bring on standby units, then the price can go even higher. Sometimes in extreme weather, like very hot conditions, a power plant will either trip or completely need to shutdown and that, if located in a critical region that provides power to many large customers, then the price can go through the roof, like the company could make tens of millions or even over 100 million. It's all about being in the right place at the right time, and your job as the meteorologist is to give the traders a chance to be in that place. When I worked in energy, we worked 5 am to 1 pm most days, remote on the weekends. However, most of the work we did took place in the first 4 hours, and the last 4 was monitoring and researching how to be better. Also working on projects. Not all companies are like this in energy or other fields, and I would say, even though there could be a lot of stress to be accurate, the workload overall was easier than most other fields I have worked in. If you want to work in energy or any field in meteorology, the best thing you can do for yourself, other than learning and using Python, is to learn how to forecast. Make forecasts for yourself, for cities in Europe or the US, and then verify the results, learn where it didn't work, and learn where it did. Don't use model data and call it your forecast. Especially in energy, the traders want you to provide them an opportunity to make a financial trade, and often this means going out on a forecast all by yourself. Hope this helps.
